Step 1 — “let’s find out what this is all about”
Exploration & Discovery
It is important to listen, and to observe. It is important to discover and be open minded to allow for the perfect solution to emerge for the unique client — every project is unique
Problems are not problems, they are challenges to work through They are solutions that have not yet been found
So the first step is to listen, observe, identify, discover and categorize so that a clear program can be developed — tailor made — to the client’s specific needs
Step 2 — “work with care to produce a useful, attractive design for the long-term”
Design & Intents
This is where something new is created. The program is clarified and continually revisited as more contextual information is incorporated. The question becomes: how does one marry the wishlist of the client to the opportunities and challenges of the unique site in a way that is flexible –so that it will last forever, be economical in its design, and be beautiful and useful now and for future people to enjoy
Step 3 — “clear information gives clear results”
Document Drawings for Permits and Trades
Once the design is refined after several iterations working in collaboration with the client, the process of documentation (drawing + specifying) takes place
The two principal reasons for documentation are to obtain a building permit, and to outline to the contractor, trades people, sub-contractors, fabricators and suppliers what the final project should be
This process requires orchestration, attention to detail, patience, and passion and experience to be both economical, effective, and to produce excellent work
The documentation work must be specific and clear to each craftsperson and tradesperson, yet be clear so as not to have a contractor or city official be inundated in repetitive and unnecessary information
